This artwork intricately depicts the naval clash between the British and Spanish fleets, with a meticulously detailed engraved plan complemented by an inset map of Spain and Portugal. Produced in 1797, it was designed under the direction of Sir Archibald Alison as part of an atlas, which provided a comprehensive overview of military events related to Alison’s History of Europe.

The detailed representation of the naval formations lends historical insights into 18th-century naval warfare. This artwork’s significance is enhanced by its inclusion in a wider collection exploring Europe and its colonies, serving as both a historical document and a work of art that beautifully marries form and function.
The lithograph stands out not only for its historical value but also for its use of color and design. Hand-colored elements bring the tumultuous sea scenes and tactical movements to life, bridging the past and present through skillful artistry. The work’s authenticity and historical reverence make it an essential addition to collections focusing on military history, maritime studies, or cartographic art.
