Description

Battle of Fleurus, 26 June 1794 by AK Johnston, 1794: French Revolutionary War

Introducing “Battle of Fleurus, 26 June 1794” by AK Johnston, a finely detailed antique colour lithograph, encapsulating a pivotal moment in European military history. Engraved by W. & A.K. Johnston and commissioned as part of Sir Archibald Alison’s “History of Europe,” this artwork offers a dynamic tableau of strategic warfare during significant battles from the French Revolution era to the restoration of the Bourbons.

This exquisite lithograph is available as a high-quality fine art print, reproduced meticulously on either acid-free archival paper or artist’s cotton canvas, ensuring a durable, vibrant display that promises not to fade or wrinkle over decades. Restored by The Unique Maps Co., each print can be customized, offering you options for personalisation to enhance its timeless appeal for any space.

Artist Alexander Keith Johnston was renowned as a distinguished cartographer and geographer, leaving behind an influential legacy in 19th-century map-making. His collaboration with his brother, William, resulted in many important atlases and educational resources that combined artistic beauty with scientific accuracy, making them highly valued for their precision and aesthetic appeal.

The “Battle of Fleurus, 1794” artwork is notably detailed, capturing the concerted clash between French and Austrian forces. It showcases the arrangement of cavalry, infantry, and artillery, with relief illustrated through hachures to give a visual sense of the battlefield’s topography. This piece provides not only an artistic representation but a scholarly resource detailing the military layouts of this significant encounter.

In analyzing the artistic components, the use of rich colours and descriptive line work are hallmark traits of Johnston and Alison’s pieces, effectively combining informative detail with compelling visual artistry. The lithograph advantageously positions historical accuracy and aesthetic finesse, making it a must-have for art collectors and history aficionados alike.

This striking art print serves as a splendid gift for those with interests in history, military strategy, or early cartographic art. It is ideal for Christmas, Father’s Day, or housewarming celebrations, and would enrich any collection with its academic and artistic value. The “Battle of Fleurus, 26 June 1794” print is not just a decorative piece, but a conversation starter and a doorway into a crucial era of European history.
