Old Map of Wiltshire in 1665 by Joan Blaeu – Salisbury, Stonehenge, Swindon, Trowbridge, Chippenham, Melksham
This is an exceedingly rare, old full colour map of Wiltshire created by master mapmaker Joan Blaeu from his workshop in Amsterdam and originally published in this Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive Atlas Novus in 1665.
Originally handcoloured almost 400 years ago, this is one of the finest examples of this map that I’ve ever seen.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12×16 inches (31x41cm), 18×24 inches (45.5x61cm), and 24×30 inches (61x76cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 37×50 inches (94x127cm). Please get in touch if you’re looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20×16 inch (51×40.5cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for more options, I have another interesting Wiltshire map by John Speed in 1611.
Many of the towns, villages and cities in the southwest England county of Wiltshire are already visible in this map. You can also easily see Stonehenge on this map.
Most of Wiltshire’s most populous towns and cities have already popped into existence by the 1600s. Here are some of the places clearly visible in this old map of the county of Wiltshire: Swindon, Salisbury, Trowbridge, Chippenham, Melksham, Devizes, Warminster, Calne, Westbury, Corsham, Wroughton, Wootton Bassett, Amesbury, Tidworth, Bradford-upon-Avon, Marlborough and many more. But of course, many of them are spelt in their Early Modern English forms.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain Wiltshire town or village is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father’s Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Wiltshire or someone who has Wilts in their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you’d like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
