Old Stamp Map of the World, 1947 by E. Chase – Historical Post Office Atlas, Landmarks, Penny Black
This rather unique map of the world, originally published by Ernest Dudley Chase in 1947, features dozens of highly detailed illustrations of postage stamps. The stamps are predominantly famous, rare or significant maps from the early 1900s.
Most of the stamps are placed near the location that is featured on the stamp, though around the edges of the map are many more interesting stamps from around the world. For example, Britain’s stamp is the 1 penny stamp from 1925 celebrating the British Empire Exhibition. There’s also a special section just for the One Penny Black, the first government issued adhesive stamp.
Ernest Dudley Chase, who would eventually become one of the most prolific and popular pictorial map makers, originally started his careers as a graphic artist. He didn’t start making maps until fairly late in his life, but as you can see, he had a real passion for creating humorous, interesting and incredibly detailed maps. He mostly focused on the US, though he also made a few world maps, and even a few maps made of postage stamps!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12×16 inches (31x41cm), 18×24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24×36 inches (61×91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 120 inches (305cm). Please get in touch if you’re looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36×24 inch (91.5x61cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this Old Pictorial Map of the Seven Wonders of the World by Ernest Dudley Chase in 1939.
The details and locations on this map include:
Countries such as China, Australia, India, Great Britain, Mexico and America.
Dotted around the maps are stamps from all over the world including ones from Hong Kong, Egypt, Canada, Greenland and even the Falklands.
There are also stamps on the edge of the map that have famous landmarks and buildings, with labels such as Togo of West Africa and the stamp of New Caledonia, South Pacific.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father’s Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone who is love to collect stamps or someone looking for a slightly different map of the world.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you’d like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
