Description

The Total Eclipse of the Sun by Etienne Leopold Trouvelot, 1882

Introducing “The Total Eclipse of the Sun,” a magnificent depiction by Etienne Leopold Trouvelot, renowned as the “Audubon of the Sky.” Originally published in 1882, this stunning antique colour lithograph captures a total solar eclipse as observed by Trouvelot in the Wyoming Territory during the summer of 1878. This work forms part of Trouvelot’s esteemed “Astronomical Drawings” set, published by Charles Scribner’s Sons.

We are thrilled to offer an exceptionally high-quality fine art print of this remarkable lithograph, meticulously restored and prepared by The Unique Maps Co. Not only can you purchase this beautifully preserved piece of history, but you can also personalise and customise your print to create a truly unique artwork that speaks to you and your aesthetic preferences.

Etienne Leopold Trouvelot was a celebrated 19th-century French artist and astronomer, whose detailed celestial illustrations earned him widespread acclaim. Trouvelot’s dedication to merging art with his passion for the cosmos is evident in each of his works. The rich hues and delicate detailing in “The Total Eclipse of the Sun” are testaments to his keen observational skills and artistic finesse.

This lithograph is notable for its vibrant portrayal of the sun’s corona and solar prominences. The pale greenish light of the corona extends in halo-like rays, while the two remarkable wings stretch eastward and westward, illustrating the positions of Mercury and Venus during the eclipse. The dark disk of the moon, partially revealing the chromospheric prominences, adds an element of dramatic beauty to this celestial event.

Having “The Total Eclipse of the Sun” on your wall is not only a visual delight but also a conversation starter. Its intricate details and historical significance make it a perfect choice for astronomy enthusiasts and art aficionados alike. This piece represents a captivating moment in astronomical history, immortalised through the eyes of a master artist.

This would make a wonderful gift for any special occasion—whether it’s Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, a housewarming, or a work-leaving celebration. Present this exquisite work to someone with impeccable taste in art, or a keen interest in astronomy and the natural world, and let it illuminate their space with its celestial charm .

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
