Description

Tradescantia Discolor by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, 1802

Tradescantia Discolor, first published in 1802, is a stunning botanical illustration by the renowned Pierre-Joseph Redouté. As one of the greatest botanical illustrators of his time, Redouté’s work was highly celebrated and remains beloved today. Born in Belgium, he first gained recognition as a painting tutor to Marie Antoinette. Later, he dedicated much of his career to painting the flora of Château de Malmaison at the behest of Josephine Bonaparte, wife of General Napoléon. Over his prolific career, Redouté created more than 2,100 botanical pieces detailing over 1,800 species, showcasing his exceptional dedication and skill.

Now, you can own a unique, personalized art print of Tradescantia Discolor. Handcrafted meticulously at The Unique Maps Co. workshop, it is printed on thick, archival matte paper that resists fading and wrinkling, ensuring your piece remains vibrant for decades.

This particular artwork stands out not only for its historical significance but also for its striking aesthetics. The Victorian botanical illustration captures the intricate beauty of the Tradescantia Discolor, or commonly known as the Moses-in-the-Cradle, with its rich and vibrant color palette. Redouté’s masterful use of color and detail brings to life the combination of deep purples and lush greens characteristic of this exotic plant, making each print a visual delight.

Owning this illustration is not just acquiring a piece of history; it’s an opportunity to celebrate the unparalleled artistry and scientific dedication of Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Whether you’re an enthusiast of botanical art, a horticulturist, or simply admire exquisite artistry, this print is a valuable addition to any collection.

Tradescantia Discolor makes a thoughtful gift for any occasion—be it a birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day, or an anniversary. Its timeless beauty and historical intrigue will certainly delight art lovers and nature enthusiasts alike.

You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn’t available online, please get in touch.

This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
