World War 2 Map, 1939 by Ernest Dudley Chase – Hitler’s Dream of Expansion – Nazi Germany Territory
This illustrated map by Ernest Dudley Chase, originally published in 1939, shows a very detailed pictorial map of Europe on the eve of World War 2. This map shows, in a rather striking blood-red, the current territory of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany and its expansionist desires.
Ernest Dudley Chase, who would eventually become one of the most prolific and popular pictorial map makers, originally started his careers as a graphic artist. He didn’t start making maps until fairly late in his life, but as you can see, he had a real passion for creating humorous, interesting and incredibly detailed maps. He mostly focused on the US, though he also made a few world maps, and even a few maps made of postage stamps!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12×16 inches (31x41cm), 18×24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24×36 inches (61×91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (178cm). Please get in touch if you’re looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24×18 inch (61×45.5cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of World War 2 in Europe by Stanley Turner in 1942.
The locations on this map include: France, Spain, Portugal, England, Ireland, Russia, Poland, Germany and Italy. The main cities of the European countries are also highlighted such as Rome, Paris, London, Dublin, Sofia, Madrid and Munich. Dotted all around the map are famous landmarks such as The Leaning Tower of Pisa, The Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Pena Palace and Lichtenstein Castle.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father’s Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone who has a keen interest in World War 2 or is a history fanatic.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you’d like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
